I produce wheel-thrown pottery and work in high fired porcelain. I use a variety of incising and carving techniques with commercial stains, stained engobes or slip-inlay. My designs are often etched through colored slips that are applied to a leather-hard clay body. After an initial bisque firing, each piece is coated with a hard gloss glaze that is lightly tinted or celadon and fired in a gas kiln to a temperature of 2300 degrees Fahrenheit.

The western landscape and culture are reflected in my work, but inspiration often comes from the rich, timeless grace of the oriental traditions. Designs are created in floral, fish, insects and animal themes. Motifs can evolve from nature, myths, or fantasies. I enjoy making functional ware. It provides simple honest forms for my imagination and becomes part of the familiar, comforting rituals of everyday life. Pottery, as vessels of patience, care and generosity, are endearing reminders of our spiritual connections and the art of living.

Clay is the durable, natural medium for my tapestry of patterns and motifs. The pure smoothness and spaciousness or porcelain and the way it compliments and harmonizes with delicate lines and images are an endless fascination to me. Pottery continually nurtures my instinct for order, structure and beauty. Balancing design with the fluid spontaneity and earthliness of wheel-formed pottery is an endless challenge.

Theresa graduated from the University of California, studying Sociology and Environmental Studies. Her travels in Asia kindled her interest in ceramics. She has been a full-time potter in Montana since 1979, regularly exhibiting work throughout the region. Theresa currently works and resides in Shepherd, Montana with her family in their home overlooking the Yellowstone River.
