Back to John Schade Gallery

I am continually fascinated and impressed by a culture that lived for 12,000 years on a pretty fragile landscape without changing it.  The mysticism that seems to come from being on this land is an inspiration for my work.  Our current culture- which has, in many ways, compromised the land and its own survival in just 135 years – can learn a great deal from the Plains Indian culture.  I chose to locate in an area of old fourth generation ranches, a largely untouched part of Wyoming that had been the hunting grounds of the powerful Lakota, Ogalala and Northern Cheyenne tribes.  Here at the edge of the Big Horn range and the Powder River Basin, it is clear to see how the land inspired the mystical qualities of Native American culture and religion.
